Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)
Rhinoplasty - is also referred to as nose surgery or nose reshaping and may be referred to as a ‘nose job’. It is used to change the size, alter the profile of the nose or correct any defects, to create balanced proportions and improve function.
Nose surgery corrects imperfections, for balanced proportions and improved function
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape the nose, which includes changing the size, altering the profile or correcting any defects. This type of surgery can also narrow the span of the nostrils and relieve any breathing problems. Septorhinoplasty involves operating on the bones and cartilage to make the septum straight.
It’s important to discuss your expectations with your surgeon, in order to set clear goals ahead of time. The best candidates for rhinoplasty are in good physical and psychological health, and are realistic about what the procedure can achieve.
There are two possible approaches to surgery - when performed from inside the nose, only limited correction can be done. Open rhinoplasty can achieve greater and more predictable outcomes, however with this approach or narrowing of the nostrils small fine scars will be present.
In addition to temporary swelling, other problems may include bleeding, septal perforation and skin problems. These issues are typically rare, and we take a range of preventative measures to reduce any risks.
Initial results will be exciting but masked by some swelling and bruising. As the days and weeks progress your nose will begin to look even better, and it is important to remember that healing is a slow and gradual process - slight swelling might be present for months after the procedure.
Many patients take time to “bond” with their new look, but rest assured it’s totally normal - this stage will pass.
For every step of your plastic surgery
journey, we are by your side.
Bendigo Plastic Surgery follows a simple tried-and-tested process for our surgical procedures. From initial consultation, to recovery and beyond, our team will look after you.
1
Before surgery
Our surgeon will discuss the procedure during the initial consultation, in order to establish your desired outcomes. The structure of your nose and face will be carefully evaluated, as factors like nasal bone, face shape and age can affect the results.
We plan with imaging that can provide a realistic proposal of what your new nose could look like after surgery, this we share with all our patients. Other procedures like chin augmentation may be suggested if your proportions are imbalanced. Some patients may be eligible for Medicare and health fund rebates.
2
During surgery
Surgery can take up to two hours, while more complicated procedures require more time. Incisions are made to separate the skin from the supporting framework of bone and cartilage. The underlying cartilage is then sculpted, reduced or augmented.
It may be necessary to harvest extra tissue from the septum, ear or rib. The type of sculpting depends on the look you want to achieve, which also influences the technique used during surgery. Once complete, the skin is re-draped over the new structure. Nasal packing can mostly be avoided.
3
After surgery
Once complete, a splint will be applied to maintain the shape and help with swelling. You can expect swelling for several days afterwards - your face will feel puffy and your nose may ache. This can be alleviated with cold compresses and simple pain medication.
We recommend bed rest with the head elevated on the day after the procedure, and minor bleeding may occur in the first few days. Dressings, splints and stitches will be removed after one week, and we’ll schedule follow up visits to monitor your progress for up to six months.
