Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are also known as wrinkle fillers, facial fillers, lip augmentation, wrinkle relaxers and skin rejuvenation. They are a minimally invasive treatment that gently restores volume to the skin and lips while minimising lines and wrinkles.

Dermal fillers gently restore volume to the skin and lips, minimising fine lines and wrinkles

Dermal fillers are a versatile treatment option that can target specific areas for improvement, such as under eye fillers, cheek fillers, lip fillers and nose fillers. They can also be used as general face fillers, for a fresh and rejuvenated overall appearance.

Our dermal fillers can improve facial lines and folds, as well as restore and improve facial contours. Treatment with a dermal filler can restore lost natural volume in the upper face (temples), midface (cheeks) and lower face (jaw).

Examples of areas that can be rejuvenated:

  • eyebrow
  • temples
  • under eye hollows
  • cheeks
  • nasolabial fold
  • marionette lines
  • chin and fold
  • back of hand
  • lips
  • lower jawline and jowls
  • nose
  • neck and decolletage

Types of dermal fillers

We use different types of temporary fillers, and the choice of injectable will depend on your desired result and the type of skin being treated. They have been studied in clinical trials for years, and have been shown to be well tolerated and safe.

Hyaluronic acid fillers

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring complex sugar already present in the skin. It helps skin hydration by attracting and holding water, while combining with collagen and elastin to help skin structure and elasticity. Results are instant.

Treatment results are instant and the longevity of results will vary from 4-18 months, depending on age, skin type, lifestyle, the area treated and the type of HA used. A number of brands are available, including Restylane and Purlane.

Poly-L-lactic acid filler

This dermal filler contains particles of poly-L-lactic acid (PLA), which is a synthetic polymer of the alpha-hydroxy-acid family. These microparticles stimulate the build up of  the body’s own collagen to smooth out lines and wrinkles, restoring facial volume.

PLA creates a long-term tissue response over a course of weeks, so results are not instant and multiple treatments are necessary. The longevity of results will depend on age, skin type, lifestyle and the area being treated. The effects can last for two years.

Frequently asked questions about dermal fillers

What is a dermal filler treatment?

Collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid are naturally occurring in the skin, providing structure and volume. These diminish as we age, or due to sun exposure, smoking and stress. Dermal fillers gently restore structure and volume to the skin and lips.

Who will perform my dermal filler treatment?

A registered nurse who is thoroughly trained in the latest techniques of facial rejuvenation will perform the procedure. Our nurse has years of experience and is constantly updating her techniques in order to provide outstanding results for our patients.

What results can I expect?

Facial lines will soften but may not completely disappear, depending on crease depth. Softening facial lines and recreating facial contours will make you appear more refreshed and less tired. It delivers a subtle improvement that many people notice.

How long do dermal fillers last?

Results can vary from 4-18 months, depending on the area treated and which HA product is used. If a poly-l-lactic acid  (PLA) product is used the effects can last up to 2 years. Longevity will vary depending on age, skin type, lifestyle and the area treated.

Are there any possible side effects?

Any side effects are generally injection site related, such as redness, swelling, lumps, bruising, itching, skin discolouration, pain and tenderness. These are mild and tend to resolve in a few days, but for some treatments they may last longer.

What do dermal fillers cost?

The cost of treatment will depend on the type of dermal filler used, and the amount that is required to achieve the desired effect. The type of filler and the dose will vary according to the individual, so it would be best to discuss this with your surgeon.

For every step of your plastic surgery
journey, we are by your side.

Bendigo Plastic Surgery follows a simple tried-and-tested process for our surgical procedures. From initial consultation to recovery and beyond, our team will take care of you.

1

Before treatment

A complimentary, no-obligation consultation is provided by our trained practitioner to start the process. This is where you will be able to discuss your desired outcomes, ask questions and share any concerns you may have.

Following an assessment and an examination, we will come up with a tailored plan for you. Together we will discuss the most appropriate treatment, the results we can achieve and the estimated costs of the procedure before moving forward.

2

During treatment

The procedure for dermal fillers involves several fine injections to your lips. The clinic nurse will ensure that your procedure is made as comfortable as possible by applying ice and topical anaesthetic to the area as required.

A registered nurse will perform your dermal filler treatment. Our nurses are thoroughly trained in the latest techniques of facial rejuvenation, and injection sites will be kept to a minimum. The treatment will take 30-45 minutes, depending on the area being treated.

3

After treatment

Once complete we will advise you of the necessary aftercare protocols, and we will review your progress in a follow up appointment after two weeks. Swelling is totally normal and can last for a few hours or upwards of a day, depending on multiple factors.

It’s important to avoid intense heat and strenuous exercise for 24 hours after the procedure. The use of cool compresses can assist with the swelling and it is advised to avoid oil based makeup and to not massage the treated area.
