Dupuytren's

Dupuytren’s disease is an inherited hand condition that results in significant curling or contracture of the fingers, impairing hand function. Non surgical treatments for Dupuytren’s have poor outcomes, while hand surgery returns excellent results.

Surgery is used to successfully treat Dupuytren’s, restoring the function of the hands

Dupuytren’s disease is an inherited condition, and is not a work or hand-use related disorder. Many people living in Central Victoria have Scottish, Welsh and Irish ancestry, and have inherited the DNA abnormality for Dupuytren’s that has been passed down through the generations since Viking times.

Dupuytren’s is common: the condition can be very subtle, or can have more aggressive presentations in young and diabetic patients. Many non surgical treatments have been trialled, but tend to achieve temporary and limited outcomes. Hand surgery followed by hand therapy is the gold standard for treatment, delivering exceptional results.

For every step of your plastic surgery
journey, we are by your side.

Bendigo Plastic Surgery follows a simple tried-and-tested process for our surgical procedures. From initial consultation, to recovery and beyond, our team will look after you.

1

Before surgery

Cold weather impairs functional hand recovery, so your surgery will be carefully scheduled to avoid winter and the colder months of the year. With surgery scheduled for the warmer months of the year, your full recovery will happen faster.

2

During surgery

Hand surgery for Dupuytren’s can be treated as day surgery, and will not require overnight admission to hospital. New surgical approaches including fat transfer have been successfully used to treat Dupuytren’s in Bendigo since 2016.

3

After surgery

Most patients comment on the lack of discomfort following surgery, and you will be fitted with a hand splint to aid in recovery. After hand surgery, ongoing therapy from an occupational therapist or physiotherapist is vital to supporting your recovery.

We will refer you to skilled practitioners who have a minimum of 4 years of specialised hand therapy.
